Like A Symphony, AU ~ A Lirry One Shot

The ivory keys danced beneath his fingers as music filled the room. He looked out to the large crowd and breathed in slightly. This was what it was all about. He looked for a certain face out there, but even though he couldn’t find him, just knowing that he was there made it all better. One boy could make all his nerves go away.
The sun shone through the window, catching the curtains and lighting them up as they blew in the breeze. The window was cracked open, sending a sweep of warm air through the room. His overgrown curly hair stuck to his forehead, clinging on to his sweat covered brow. The humidity enveloped the boy as he sat at the large piano, plinking on a few keys angrily. Frustration overcame him as his fingers tangled together, attempting to work out the piece of music in front of him.
The click of a door hinge caused the boy to look up. A tall, lanky, curly haired boy stood at the doorway, an eyebrow raised expectantly at him.
“Hey Liam, you’re still practicing?” The boy at the door spoke, a frown appearing on his face.
“Yeah, Haz.” He spoke, shuffling with the papers on the piano, looking for a piece that would be enough to impress the younger boy.
“Liam, you will do fine.” Harry spoke, making his way towards the piano. “You’ve done this a hundred times before. You will be phenomenal.”
“You have to say that. You’re my best friend.” He scoffed, wiping his brow as the hot sun beamed through the large window. Harry gingerly sat down next to the boy on the piano bench, pressing their arms together lightly. A smile spread across his face as he threw an arm around Liam, squeezing the other boy.
“Let’s go get some water, Li. It is so hot out.” He urged, nudging him slightly before standing up.
“No.” Liam shook his head, focusing his attention back on the piano. “I need to practice for tonight. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.”
Harry accepted this answer, realizing that there was no way he was going to get Liam out of the practice room anytime soon. He sighed heavily, leaving the room. But before he fully got out of the room he turned to take one look at the older boy, to take in all his features, to admire the beauty in his frustrated face as he looked down at the ivory keys.

“And next in the showcase we have a special guest. He has performed here at the Opera House over 12 times. He has been studying classical piano since he was the age of 6 and works at a professional level that no other 18 year old has worked at before. So give a warm welcome to, Mr. Liam Payne.” The announcer boomed through the microphone as the audience erupted in a storm of applause.
Harry sat at the table, his hands clasped together tightly. Liam slowly walked onto the stage and over to the piano with a small smile on his face. The whole audience grew silent as he pulled out the bench and slipped onto it before placing his music in front of him. He breathed deeply, so deeply that his chest could be seen moving up and down from the back seat of the theater.
“Come on, Liam.” Harry whispered to himself as Liam began to play. His teeth clenched together and he wiped his sweaty palms on the pants of his suit.
The ivory keys danced beneath the fingers of the older boy, music softly flowing and filling the large room. The audience sat in a daze, so entranced by the beautiful music being played right in front of them. He looked out into the crowd. This was what it was all about; this is why he was here tonight. His eyes scanned the room for a certain boy. And despite that fact that he couldn’t see him, just knowing he was there made it all better. Just the idea of him being there made all of his nerves drift away.
Applause filled the room as he finished the piece, a huge smile on his face as he stood up, bowing and leaving the stage. Little did he know, the younger boy sat back at his table, tears streaming down his face as he clapped ferociously, extremely proud of his best friend.

“You were amazing.” Harry spoke in the car on the way back to their house. Liam replied with a smile and a glance at the younger boy as they continued to drive. The house came into view as they turned a corner, pulling into the dirt driveway that twisted a few times.
They were both greeted with the humid, sticky night air as they pulled the doors open. The front foyer greeted them as they entered the house, dropping their jackets on the small bench to the right of the door. Liam was the first to walk fully into the house, heading straight for the kitchen.
He grabbed a glass from the fridge, helping himself to some ice cold water as Harry hung up their jackets in the other room.
“I think I’m going to bed, Harry.” He yelled through the doorway before placing his glass in the sink and heading to his room.
Harry just smiled in return, aware that no one would be able to see this gesture. His feet brought him to Liam’s room after cleaning everything off. The light shone through a small crack in the door before Harry pushed it all the way open. Liam lay face down on the bed, still fully clothed but sound asleep. A small chuckle escaped Harry’s mouth before he walked over, pulling a blanket over him before walking back to the door.
“I’m so proud of you, Li.” He smiled, switching the light off and pulling the door closed, the image of a peaceful sleeping Liam still fresh in his mind. “I love you.” He whispered, unsure if he was saying it for anyone else or just for himself.
